How to Clean Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposal units make post-meal cleanup much easier! It is important to take good care of these useful pieces of equipment. Although it may appear difficult, the garbage disposal is not complicated. There are only a few things you need to do. Here’s a guide:

Take care of the unit

After unplugging the power source to the garbage disposal unit you can check that the circuit breaker is off. This will ensure that you aren’t hurt even if you have to clean your unit.

To clean the unit, make sure to wear rubber gloves or latex gloves. To flash down the drain, keep a torch or light source nearby. Check that there aren’t any large objects clogging the drain.

Use Pliers and Other Tools

To remove any debris from the drainpipe, use pliers, tongs, or other tools. You should hold the drainpipes firm but not too hard.

You could cause damage to the valves or pipes if you apply too much force. Although the damage may not be severe, it can cause serious problems. Make sure you remove all removable parts and clean them with a mild disinfectant. Then, put them back in to ensure they fit correctly.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Although you might believe that the chemicals will clear away all leftover debris, they can cause pipes and drains to deteriorate over time. For more extensive maintenance, you will need to hire professional plumbers.

To clean your garbage disposal, you can use regular dishwashing detergent or soap. Use gloves to reach the drain.
